Fluid Transfer Pump FAQs

What is a fluid transfer pump?

Fluid displacement pumps, also known as transfer pumps, help to displace fluid from the bottom of a polyurethane drum and transfer the fluid to the hose.

The pressure created from the fluid transfer pump ultimately provides an even and consistent distribution of material as the material is transferred from the bottom of the barrel to the hose and eventually to the tip of your spray foam gun. It is at this point that it mixes with a second material, causing it to react.

Are Fluid Transfer Pumps the Same as Foam Pumps, Barrel Pumps, or Drum Pumps?

Yes. To the new polyurethane applicator, transfer pumps can be confusing. Fluid transfer pumps can have many names which include foam pump, barrel pump, drum pump, or fluid displacement pump, which sometimes leads to confusion.

When dealing with industrial materials and high/low pressure hoses, it is important to have industrial liquid transfer pumps, such as the ones made by PMC and IPM. Having the wrong pump can cause you to waste time and money by wasting material and getting an inconsistent application.

What are the differences between gear Transfer Pumps and Piston Transfer Pumps?

When working with gear pumps and piston pumps, it is important to know the differences between them and if you are selecting the correct liquid transfer pump.

Check out the main differences between gear pumps and piston pumps below:

  • Gear Transfer Pumps: Gear pumps are a type of positive displacement pump. Gear pumps move fluid repeatedly, enclosing a fixed volume using interlocking gears and transferring it mechanically using a cyclic pumping action. Gear pumps are not new and have been around for hundreds of years.

  • Piston Transfer Pumps: Piston pumps are positive-displacement pumps that use a piston and plunger to displace and pressurize fluids. Either single or double acting, piston pumps operate by using the force of the pumping mechanism to expand and contract an internal movable volume of liquid.

What maintenance is required for fluid transfer pumps?

Regular maintenance should be commonly practiced to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your transfer pumps. This typically includes routine inspections and cleaning, lubrication of moving parts, replacing any worn out seals, and checking for any signs of wear or damage. Also, be sure to always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for maintenance required for your specific fluid transfer pump.

How do I make sure to choose the right transfer pump for my needs?

Selecting the correct fluid transfer pump involves understanding the specific requirements for your application, such as the type of fluid you are transferring and the pressure specifications.

Be sure to check the product descriptions and maximum output fluid pressure of each transfer pump to choose the one that fits your needs. If you require any assistance during your selection, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team!

Can SprayWorks Equipment’s fluid transfer pumps handle a wide range of materials?

Yes, our offerings of transfer pumps are designed to handle a range of liquids from low to high viscosity. Furthermore, some of our pumps are electroless nickel-plated carbon steel, so can be used with all of your single and plural component chemicals. Gear or piston pumps may be more suitable depending on the high viscosity of the material.

It’s important to choose a fluid transfer pump with the appropriate specifications for the viscosity of the fluid to ensure efficient operation.

How do I properly install a transfer pump?

Proper installation is critical to the successful operation of a fluid transfer pump. We recommend following the installation guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
